Abstract

Pectoral spines have different ornamentation patterns that vary markedly among families, genera and species. In this paper, the external morphology of the pectoral spines of 10 siluriform species from Northeastern of Argentina, caught in the Paraná River Basin, was analyzed. In this context, new data for identification of different taxa of Siluriformes, which are of great importance to the systematic interpretation of the group, is provided. Original drawings and detailed descriptions comparing each spines are offered. In addition, a comprehensive glossary of specific terminology of different structures described herein is presented.
