This article is an advancement in the investigation of preliminary questions attempting to give an account of commercial activities called "illegal" or 'smuggling'' by the regulating framework of the Law. The chosen place is the east of Entre Rios in the mid 19th century, setting of the selected case of the "Chilotegui couple", accused of clandestinely entering the booty of plunders in Paysandú duting the Rivera occupation. This framework has permitted the study of illegal commercial practices, and the action of the judicial officials dealing with this crime, in a dynamic commercial circuit of a permeable frontier region where such activity was not uncommon.
